Whether you are coming home to visit family, travelling for work or exploring Guyana for the first time, a little preparation makes the first few hours much easier. Here are our drivers’ top tips.

1. Book your ride before you fly

Many international flights land late in the evening. Booking ahead means a driver is waiting with your name when you walk out of customs, and you know the fare before you land.

2. Carry some cash

Card payments are growing, but cash is still king in many places. Bring some US dollars and change a little into Guyana dollars (GYD) in the city, where rates are usually better than at the airport.

3. Sort out your phone

Bring an unlocked phone and pick up a local SIM card in Georgetown, or check your roaming plan. WhatsApp is the most common way to contact businesses — including us.

4. Pack for the tropics

  • Light, breathable clothes and a light rain jacket — showers can be heavy.
  • Sunscreen, a hat and insect repellent.
  • A small bag in your carry-on with medicines and a change of clothes, in case checked luggage is delayed.

5. Keep your documents handy

Have your passport, onward ticket and accommodation address ready for immigration. Check entry requirements with your airline shortly before you travel.

6. If your bag doesn’t arrive

Report it at the airline desk before leaving the baggage hall and keep the file reference number. You don’t need to go back to the airport: our Lost Baggage Recovery service collects it and delivers it to your hotel or home.

7. Expect a relaxed pace

Things can move a little slower than at home — build some slack into your first day and enjoy it.

8. Plan your return early

Add your return trip to CJIA when you book your arrival and save 10%. We pick you up in good time for your departure.
