Georgetown is a laid-back capital of wide avenues, canals and painted wooden buildings. You can see the main sights in a day — on foot, by taxi, or on our guided city tour by car.
Stabroek Market
The cast-iron market with its famous clock tower is the city’s busiest spot. Come in the morning for fresh produce, spices, crafts and snacks, and keep valuables close in the crowds.
St. George’s Cathedral
One of the tallest wooden churches in the world, this white Gothic-style Anglican cathedral is a short walk from the market and is beautiful inside and out.
The Seawall
Much of Georgetown sits below sea level, protected by a long seawall. In the late afternoon locals stroll, jog and gather along it — a good place to catch the breeze and watch the sunset. Sunday evenings are especially lively.
Botanical Gardens and the Zoo
Lily ponds, tall palms, birdlife and — if you are lucky — manatees surfacing in the canals. The Guyana Zoo is next door and gives a good introduction to local wildlife.
